The Spark

On September 12, 2003, less than ˝ of one percent of registered voters in West Deerfield Township (WDT) attended a poorly publicized meeting scheduled to grease the approval of a proposal for the purchase of property controlled by the Township Assessor. The stated purpose of the purchase was to construct a building to house the Township’s self imposed, expanded activities. A roaring approval was given by the “stacked deck” of an estimated 90 individuals attending the meeting, which included most of the Republican Township Committeemen (and fellow travelers), a sizable portion of food pantry volunteers, and apparently a number of individuals who receive Townships freebies.

Unfortunately, the other 99.95% of registered voters were not in attendance, or they would have laughed this proposal into oblivion. But they weren’t there for a number of reasons including lack of knowing the meeting was even being held, to pressing family issues centering around school preparations and related matters.

In defending her position regarding lack of notice, the Township Supervisor stated it was publicized in the Deerfield Review. But if there ever was an issue of the Deerfield Review which wasn’t read, it was the August 28th issue carrying the article about the meeting. School was getting ready to open, parents and children were scurrying around shopping for supplies, reading regulations, getting clothing together, and similar matters. In addition, few voters are even aware a Township governmental structure even exists, much less what it does. There should be no doubt these facts were in the minds of those scheduling the meeting.

The bottom line is the acquisition of unincorporated areas by surrounding communities has made the WDT Supervisor’s job all but extinct. In an effort to maintain the illusion WDT activities play a vital role in community affairs, they are attempting to create a job where one no longer exists! A Township’s three mandates are to maintain roads in unincorporated areas, provide for property assessment, and provide for general assistance where necessary. Since there are only two miles of unincorporated area roads left to maintain, that function is farmed out to Vernon Township. The Assessor’s duty can easily be performed by the County Assessor’s Office and as far as general assistance is concerned, a speaker at the September 10th Township meeting stated there were only 40 or so recipients to service each month (this in response to concerns about increased traffic which could be expected on Deerfield Road as a consequence of their proposed new building). Interestingly enough, the 40 factor is ten less than the number of food baskets distributed by the Township for Thanksgiving in 1994! This is simply another display of arrogance by the WDT Republican Party in general, and by WDT officials in particular. Only this time it will not go unanswered!

The independent Impact Voters of America has taking a leadership position in keeping residents up-to-date on the West Deerfield Township Republican Party’s “plaything.” As we progress in our educational tour, we will be seeking voter input, opening a Speakers Bureau, and assisting others organize to oust, what we believe to be, the most arrogant bunch of parasites we’ve ever seen in politics!
